Artist Working in Studio

Artist Statement

Melissa is currently creating a body of work which is exploring the dynamic contrasts of a woman currently living in patriarchy.  She uses contrasting textures, colours, and materials to convey feelings and thoughts connected to her lived and perceived experience.  Natural organic shapes are used to convey the female shape, while additional layers of embroidery, beading, texture and weaving are used to create a story.

Using the soft female shapes meant to invoke feelings of women's bodies while not overtly showing a human body.  The multiple separated areas of colour are intentional in representing emotion and experience.

Melissa Passmore lives and works from her home studio in the small town of Elmira, Ontario.  Melissa began her artistic journey as a floral artist in 2018, showing across Ontario.  Her work can be found in private collections across North America and Europe.  Since early 2024 Melissa has been exploring a new collection of art working with painting and textiles in a mixed media format.  Her new collection will be released in Fall 2024.  The new body of work is based upon her current and previous experiences as a woman in a patriarchal society.  Her interest was sparked by the journey of motherhood to two teenage daughters and her own experience moving through peri-menopause.
